Tenneco Inc., a global supplier of emission and ride control technologies, developed and manufactured a new diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filters (DPF), to assist OEMs in fulfilling 2007 and future EPA emission mandates.
Tenneco, manufacturer and marketer of Walker Commercial Vehicle emission systems and components, has been a leader in the development of diesel aftertreatment technologies globally and was one of the first global suppliers to offer both additive and catalyst-coated diesel particulate filter technologies in series production for Europe’s vehicle manufacturers.
Developed for several OE customers, Tenneco engineers emissions control products and systems that enable diesel-powered engines to cost effectively achieve mandated emissions levels. The company will offer a range of aftertreatment products in the replacement parts market when these vehicles enter the prime replacement rate.
Currently, Tenneco’s aftertreatment solution features DOC and DPF units located within the vehicle’s exhaust system. A diesel oxidation catalyst, much like an automotive catalytic converter, uses precious metals to create a chemical reaction that breaks down pollutants into less harmful components. Tenneco’s DOC technology helps convert harmful NOx into nitrogen dioxide (NO2) while oxidizing absorbed hydrocarbons. This chemical reaction also acts as a combustor for unburned fuel that is re-circulated into the exhaust stream. These systems can be packaged to incorporate silencing devices, DPF and other NOx abatement technologies for optimum efficiency.
The Tenneco DPF, located downstream of the DOC, captures ash and other fine particulate matter by compressing, filtering and expanding the engine’s exhaust gasses, the company said. These filter systems are temperature resistant and eliminate 95 percent or more of particulate matter from diesel emissions.
Designed using Tenneco’s computational fluid dynamics and particulate ash modeling computer aided engineering technologies, the DPF has an advanced modular design that allows for easy cleaning and service every 150,000 miles, the company said. This solution allows service technicians to remove the DPF from the vehicle in less than 10 minutes through a one-bolt removal system.
