Watch: Let’s talk tire inflation (part 2)

If you saw last week’s episode of On the Road, you know the importance of keeping your tire inflation correct—not too much, and not too little. If you didn’t see that episode, you can watch it here.

Today’s tire technology offers several methods of keeping your tires at the proper level of inflation. There are two types of digital tire monitoring systems: tire pressure monitoring systems, or TPMS, and automatic tire inflation systems, or ATIS. The difference between them is that TPMS monitor tire inflation, alerting drivers and fleets if it becomes too low or too high, while ATIS take it a step further and inflate the tire automatically whenever more air is required.

Whichever you choose, it doesn’t mean you can neglect periodic manual inspections. And the TPMS and ATIS systems will need periodic maintenance themselves, just like most equipment.

FTR: North American Class 8 net orders fell 37% M/M in April

The weak order level in April is not a major surprise, although it is happening earlier in the year than typically expected.

FTR-April-Class-8-Net-Orders

FTR reports that preliminary North American Class 8 net orders fell in April for the sixth time in the last seven months, coming in at 12,050 units. Order activity was down 37% month-over-month and 20% year-over-year. Class 8 orders have totaled 298,500 for the previous 12 months.

FTR says that the weak order level in April is not a major surprise, although it is happening earlier in the year than typically expected. The slowdown in orders is not a direct indication of the level of demand but rather is because build slots are filled for 2023. Reduced order levels will continue through the seasonally weak summer order period.
