Just how smart are trucking artificial intelligence solutions?

The headline question is where my conversation with Nauto’s Chief Product Officer Yoav Banin ends up. As an artificial intelligence (A.I.) and computer vision provider, Nauto uses its algorithms to identify things like potential pedestrian collision, speeding, driver fatigue and drowsiness and intersection violations, to name a few. And it’s not alone.

As more and more camera systems, both outward- and driver-facing, find their way into truck cabs, more providers are crunching that data and using A.I. to deliver actionable alerts to both drivers and fleet managers. It begs the question: Just how smart are these A.I. systems?

Using driver training technology as an example, Banin discusses the ways that A.I. can be implemented to improve fleet safety. That’s where you’ll see the ROI of these systems. We also take a step back to talk about what A.I. systems are and how they work–in layman’s terms, and hash out the differences between artificial intelligence offerings so that you can parse through the options in the market and find the right driver training and safety system can deliver.

Watch the video above for all Banin’s genuine intelligence insight on artificial intelligence.

Even one is too many for safety minded fleets who like to keep their trailers rolling productively.

The headline is a question that's on a TMC taskforce docket, and one that Al Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing at Peterson Mfg. Co., has a keen interest in.

"We haven't finished the recommended practice yet, but we're trending towards some percentage of LEDs being out before it's not legal anymore, which therefore [means] it's not safe anymore," he said, standing inside the Peterson Mfg. Co. show trailer at this year's TMC show held in New Orleans. "Keeping trailer lights lit is vital to uptime because you're not going to get a violation, you're not going to get an infraction, you're not going to be put out of service by CVSA. It is just very critical to keep everything illuminated like it should."
