Three truck data trends that are important to understand

Here's how the truck data landscape is shifting and why it's important.

Stay with me here: Truck data is important. Not only in the “it powers your dashboards so that you can make better decisions” way but also in the “you’re the fleet operating the truck and generating the data so let’s make sure you get the most out of it” way. There are potential shifts in how you’re able to access the data on the horizon. As Neil Cawse, chief executive officer, Geotab put it at Geotab Connect, the company’s annual conference that was held earlier this month:

“The future [of truck data] belongs to OEMs… It’s about making sure we have the data available for fleet KPIs. Geotab has had 20 years of experience [providing solutions], so we see ourselves as the glue between the OEMs and the customers. Given the work we’ve done to solve problems for our customers; given the work we’ve done to sit with fleets and understand the data they need and when they need, we want to work very closely with OEMs to make sure we take our knowledge to them to explain what data we need to get.”

Three of the trends that today’s truck data is driving are: integrations; fleet operation improvements; and sustainability. I caught up with Cawse for his take on how he sees data impacting these trends. Watch the video above for his take on what fleets should be aware of as the truck data landscape evolves.

Diesel powertrain technology that makes a decarbonization difference

Saving diesel can reduce CO2 emissions, but is it enough to make a difference? Volvo thinks so, and made these changes to boost efficiency.

For every gallon of diesel saved, there's a reduction of 22.4 lbs. of CO2 emissions. Putting more fuel efficient diesel trucks on the road can make a big decarbonization impact.

Consider, for example, the up-to-10% fuel efficiency gain of the all-new Volvo VNL. Volvo's turbo compounding technology is a big example of the advanced engineering behind diesel engine advancements.
