Stuart Comments: On your way to work, I am sure you think about what you want to do today, as well as what happened yesterday. Today’s new generations – X, Y, Z, whatever – get distracted by e-mails and texting because that’s what is immediate. To make sure everyone in the shop is aware of what’s going on around him or her, consider these old dog pointers:
1. Drive the yard; yes the yard, the whole yard. Observe everything that is going on
2. Get out of the vehicle and touch something, be observant
3. Check PM status of some vehicles by the sticker on the unit
4. Do a mini-mental visual audit of the vehicles
5. Look for yard debris, nails, pallets, steel, etc.
6. Talk with fellow employees about equipment and servicing
7. Look at the OS line
8. Check some tires and do visual alignments
9. Look for trailer damage
10. Make up your own list and get busy assessing equipment condition, general maintenance procedures, etc.
You may be surprised what you see or what you learn before you turn on your computer—data that you will never see in an exception report. You may find information to help you update yours or someone else’s “to-do” list.
