Kohler offers heavy-duty truck market a new DC-power APU

Kohler Power Systems said it is expanding its generator product line to include auxiliary power units (APU) for the heavy-duty trucking industry. The new Kohler 3APU-HC is in production and available for order through Kohler dealers and distributors throughout North America. The new unit offers trucking fleets, OEMs and truck owner/operators a compact APU that supplies 55 amps of DC power to keep the truck’s battery charged at all times. The Kohler product also comes equipped with separate space-saving evaporator and condenser components, providing an air-conditioning capacity of 12,000 BTU/hour and 10,000 BTU/hour of heating, the company said.

The Kohler product also comes equipped with separate space-saving evaporator and condenser components, providing an air-conditioning capacity of 12,000 BTU/hour and 10,000 BTU/hour of heating, the company said.

Understanding that compactness is crucial, Kohler designed its first APU product to be one of the smallest and lightest air-cooled units on the market (15-in. W x 24-in. H x 28-in. D and weighing less than 240 lbs.), the company said. Additionally, the Kohler APU has an oil service interval of 500 hours to reduce standard maintenance costs.

“Because no components are required to be mounted under the bunk, the Kohler 3APU-HC is a space-saver for today’s trucks,” said Stacy Peshkopia, senior product manager-mobile products. “The Kohler APU provides peace of mind that comes with a focus on reliability and ease-of-use, backed by an industry-leading distribution and service network of more than 500 Kohler distributors and dealers throughout North America.”

Additional features of the new Kohler APU include a custom sound-attenuated enclosure for quiet operation (69 dBA). It is powered by an air-cooled, 4.7 HP single-cylinder engine at 2550 RPM.

The separate evaporator features a unique design of four airflow cups to distribute heating and cooling evenly throughout the cabin, and features a control that allows complete in-cab start/stop and heating/cooling adjustments. This wall mounted unit keeps vital under bunk storage space free for other uses.

The space-saving condenser design is to be mounted outside on the back of the truck cab.
