Meritor WABCO’s ride-n-drive reaches fleets and dealers

Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems' ride-n-drive is traveling the country to demonstrate the company's active Safety Systems technologies to fleet, owner-operators and dealers. Included in the display are the SmartTrac Stability Control System, OnGuard Collision Safety Systems, Roll Stability Support and Telematics currently offered by the company.

Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems continues its series of ride-n-drive vehicle demonstrations across the country, displaying a series of progressive active Safety Systems technologies that are currently available. The sessions are open for managers and supervisors of fleets of all sizes, owner-operators, and truck and trailer dealers.

Morning and afternoon demonstrations will occur on the following dates and locations:
• June 24 at Red Deer Regional Airport, Springbrook, Ontario
• July 15 at Assiniboia Downs, Winnipeg, Manitoba
• Aug. 4 at Canterbury Park, Shakopee, Minn.
• Aug. 26 at Raceway Park Drag Strip, Englishtown, N.J.

The following Meritor WABCO active Safety Systems technologies will be available to experience first-hand on demonstration vehicles:

SmartTrac Stability Control System – The SmartTrac stability control systems are available as factory options at several truck and tractor manufacturers and encompass anti-lock braking systems, automatic traction control and stability control systems. They are designed for vehicle applications like commercial trucks, construction, fire and rescue, bus and coach, and military. The systems help drivers mitigate rollover, loss-of-control and jack knifing situations on dry, wet, snow and ice-covered roadways, the company said. The systems monitor inputs from various sensors, and when a critical threshold is met, they intervene by reducing engine torque, and engaging the engine retarder while automatically applying select brakes to improve vehicle handling and performance.

OnGuard Collision Safety Systems – OnGuard is the first Collision Safety System with Adaptive Cruise Control and active braking that functions with or without the cruise control engaged to assist the driver in maintaining a safe following distance. The system uses forward-looking radar sensor technology featuring advanced algorithms to monitor distance, speed and deceleration of a vehicle ahead, ArvinMeritor said. Through integration with the SmartTrac system, if a potential rear-end collision is developing without the driver taking action to decelerate the vehicle, OnGuard automatically de-throttles the engine, applies the engine and foundation brakes to provide up to .35Gs of braking power, according to the company.

Roll Stability Support – RSSplus is an advanced two-modulator valve, trailer-only stability control system that integrates with the trailer’s anti-lock braking system. The system simultaneously monitors trailer wheel speed, lateral acceleration and suspension pressure. If the vehicle approaches the rollover threshold, RSSplus automatically applies the trailer brakes as needed in order to reduce the risk of rollover and help bring the vehicle under control, ArvinMeritor said.

Telematics – A telematics demonstration will be showcased in order to show data transmissions from Meritor WABCO systems. Information such as live critical events and detailed driver metrics will be broadcast over J1939 and transmitted back to a dispatch unit on display, the company said.
