A steerable trailer system is currently in development from New World Product Solutions LLC. The developing prototype would allow the trailer wheels and axles to follow the tractor through any turn with control-steer. The system would use wide base single steer axle tires on aluminum rims, which reduces axle weight by up to 800 lbs. According to the company, creating an autonomous trailer system (by using a yaw angle sensor input/control variable system) with the ability to function with any tractor in the fleet and with any number of trailer axles will improve trailer maneuverability, extend trailer tire life, and allow for dispatching longer trailers into city/urban routes.
Once the system is finished being road-tested, the company will publish numbers to let fleets know what their return on investment would be.
