The supply of Class 8 trucks continues to rise faster than demand for trucks according to ACT Research’s For-Hire Trucking Index from ACT Research Co.
“The capacity index [supply] rose faster than the freight index [demand] for the class 8 supply and the eleventh time in the past thirteen months in January,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s vice president for the commercial vehicle sector. “While this measure had been getting better (less unfavorable) in previous months, a clear fall-off in freight caused the index to deteriorate further in January.”
Fleets in ACT’s survey noted that the East Coast blizzard in January had a negative effect on freight volumes. The month-by-month progression of supply and demand can be seen in the graph above.
