More reman advantages
Roy Horton, Mack director of product marketing, says, “Mack REMACK remanufactured parts cover a full range of products from complete engines, short and long blocks, mDRIVE automated manual transmissions, differentials and more. REMACK also supports legacy Mack products with cylinder heads and other engine components. All parts are remanufactured to the latest specifications and include the most recent upgrades available.”
Horton agrees that there are many advantages to remanufactured parts, with the greatest being cost. “In the case of REMACK, the parts are also remanufactured to the same specifications and tolerances as new parts,” Horton notes. “The parts are backed by a strong warranty with 100% parts and contingent damage coverage. The warranty also covers 100% of labor if an authorized Mack dealer installs the part. Many REMACK parts carry the same warranty as new parts, but at a less expensive up front cost. In addition, some parts are more readily available for a faster service experience. These advantages help customers boost their bottom lines and help get trucks back on the road more quickly.”
Factory programs
Sherman Williams, director of remanufacturing and proprietary product development for Volvo Trucks says, “For engines, we offer four levels of overhaul—from basic kits to reman engines—to fit a customer’s budget. Our GO Basic package includes pistons, liners, bearings, gaskets and a thermostat along with filters, oil and coolant. An upgraded package adds a Volvo Reman cylinder head, and a premium package includes the cylinder head as well as Volvo Reman turbo and injectors. For all packages, customers can buy just the parts or have them installed at a Volvo dealer. For premium level and reman engine, dealer installation qualifies for additional coverage at no cost. All Volvo Reman components and assemblies use the latest parts configuration optimized for durability, fuel efficiency and power and emissions performance. Volvo offers remanufactured solutions for the Volvo I-Shift transmission in four service configurations, depending on the customer’s individual need, all the way up to a complete transmission ready and dyno-tested to factory specifications.
The advantages of remanufactured engines and transmissions are the reduced risk and peace of mind that come with nationwide coverage and assemblies that perform to factory-new specifications. Standard coverage is two years unlimited mileage coverage on all “complete” reman transmissions and all “basic” reman engines. A dealer-installed “basic” reman engine with a reman turbocharger comes with a three-year/350,000 mile warranty.
Williams adds that fleets should consider warranty coverage because remanufactured assemblies often offer enhanced coverages that are advantageous, especially considering that they can save 20% to 50% by using reman components and assemblies over new.
Also, reman assemblies generally provide a quicker turnaround compared with new because reman is available in more complete assemblies. “Buyers also should recognize that the OEM ensures quality and has all the specifications. If Volvo builds it, we can overhaul it,” Williams concluded.
