The progression of the ELD mandate

Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) are about to be officially mandated for industry wide use. The final rule is expected by the end of October, once it is reviewed by the White House.

The mandate will make ELDs a requirement for drivers, as opposed to the current system of paper logs to track hours of service compliance. Once the rule is finalized, all drivers will be mandated to comply by 2019. In addition to ELDs, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets will be allowed to be used, as long as the system as a whole meets ELD requirements, including a hardwired connection to the truck’s engine.
