Time to take truck data rights seriously

Time to take truck data rights seriously

Let’s get a hard data truth out of the way: You probably don’t own your truck’s data. You know those giant end-user license agreements (EULAs) that you scroll through and accept? Yeah, those are reason you don’t own your truck data. But you should have a say (a BIG say) in how that data is used. Right now, there are conversations happening in the industry between OEMs, suppliers and telematics solutions providers about who has rights to the data that the truck is generating. Do you notice an important and relevant party missing from that conversation?

That’s right! You!

The future of how truck data is used is being decided today, and you, as the fleet that’s putting the truck through its paces, NEED to be in the conversation. This is important. (So important that I’m using all caps, and I hate all caps.) The problem is that it’s complicated. You’re a pro at running trucks, but when people start throwing out terms like “anonymized, aggregated data,” it can be intimidating.

To gain perspective on where the data usage issue is in the industry, and tips for how fleets can talk about it without getting lost in the techno jargon, I connected with Neil Cawse, chief executive officer, Geotab, for part two of our data-driven conversation. Watch the video above for all of his insight.

And don’t forget to watch part one!

Before diving down the data usage rabbit hole that Neil and I often find ourselves tumbling down, we talked the latest trucking technology trends and the solutions that fleets can put to work right now. Click below to watch that video.

Diesel powertrain technology that makes a decarbonization difference

Saving diesel can reduce CO2 emissions, but is it enough to make a difference? Volvo thinks so, and made these changes to boost efficiency.

Trucking-Sustainably-mar24.-truckengine

For every gallon of diesel saved, there's a reduction of 22.4 lbs. of CO2 emissions. Putting more fuel efficient diesel trucks on the road can make a big decarbonization impact.

Consider, for example, the up-to-10% fuel efficiency gain of the all-new Volvo VNL. Volvo's turbo compounding technology is a big example of the advanced engineering behind diesel engine advancements.
