Serjon highlights cybersecurity training as tech connects trucks

After successful attacks on large fleets, Serjon says it's important to keep all employees trained on detecting cybersecurity threats.

According to Serjon, there is an increased urgency to protect fleets and trucks from cyber-attacks. In a press release, the company outlined a February paper which demonstrated that an entire truck’s system can be shut down after a so called “cyber worm” was placed into one of the truck’s Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). Serjon says the worm can even get into the device’s network and compromise other connected vehicles. Think of it as physical hacking — a bad actor targets a piece of trucking technology, then suddenly the entire vehicle, or even multiple vehicles, are immobilized.

In addition to delaying your delivery, Serjon adds that this could make trucks a target for attackers aiming to harm the economy. Regardless of the intent, Serjon says its likely your business will feel the effects of the attack. The company presented data from BusinessDIT, which shows 60% of attacked businesses are forced to shut down within the next six months. Aiming to help prevent some of those attacks, Serjon says it is offering a cybersecurity training that was designed to prepare employees to secure and defend systems against cyber threats. Lessons include:

  • Introduction to Cybersecurity Basics;
  • Firewalls and End Point Protection;
  • Computer Equipment Setup and Configuration;
  • Maintaining and Monitoring your Environment;
  • Building Resilient and Recoverable Environments;
  • Managed Service Providers; and
  • Defending Heavy Duty Vehicles.

Serjon tells us it is working with the American Trucking Association’s (ATA) Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) to offer training to members.
