Scania speeds up autonomous transport pilot program

Equipped with Plus, Scania has been testing its trucks in Sweden since 2021 — now it plans to expand operations throughout Europe, this year.

Scania is expanding development of autonomous hub-to-hub transport solutions, with the launch of an Autonomous Commercial Pilot Program. As part of Traton Group, Scania will also be involved in a new partnership with U.S.-based Plus, which will integrate its Level 4, fully autonomous SuperDrive technology stack into Scania and Traton Group vehicles. The company says the Scania Autonomous Commercial Pilot Program is part of an increased focus on establishing customer-driven testing to demonstrate hub-to-hub technology, and creating scalable operational concepts that deliver real value in customers’ operations.

“We are committed to developing fully integrated autonomous solutions,” says Peter Hafmar, vice president and head of autonomous solutions at Scania. “This means technology that is fitted and supported directly from the factory and a solution that is designed to be operated by our customers in their existing infrastructure and operational flows.”

Scania says it has been testing autonomous solutions in Sweden since 2021, and it has plans to expand pilot operations with customers in other European countries this year. Scania’s trucks are equipped with Plus’s Level 4 autonomous driving system and have a safety driver on board. The two companies say they will pilot commercial operations with fleets, then start series production and global commercial deployment at scale.

“We got here by staying focused on what we do best – building cutting-edge autonomous driving software – while we partner with OEMs and Tier 1s to tightly integrate our tech into different vehicle platforms,” says Davie Liu, chief executive officer of Plus. “With the top global commercial vehicle OEMs having selected their autonomy partners, I expect to see focused and accelerated efforts to commercial deployment and series production ahead.”
