Mack enhancements drive up fuel efficiency

The truck maker's Pinnacle sleepers offer up to a 12.5% improvement in fuel economy, combining: optimized roof and chassis fairings for up to 6% better fuel economy; a 5% fuel economy improvement in proprietary ClearTech SCR; and Mack's mDrive transmission contribution of 1.5%.

With a continued commitment to fuel economy offerings and greater reliability, four Mack Truck executives announced a number of  product enhancements, citing improved truck market volumes and leadership in construction and refuse, with better position in trucks for economic haul vehicles like day cabs and small sleepers.

Optimized roof and chassis fairings for its Pinnacle models will add up to 6% fuel economy, according to Jerry Warmkessel, marketing manager, On-Highway. “Adding that plus a 5% fuel economy improvement in our proprietary ClearTech SCR, and our mDrive transmission contribution of 1.5%, we offer up to 12.5% improvement in the Pinnacle sleepers, and we will be in double digit market share in the near future.”

The fairings are offered for its Pinnacle 70-in. high-rise, 70-in. mid-rise and 60-in. mid-rise sleepers. The new, longer chassis fairings will cover up to a 140-gal. fuel tank.

“We found that drivers can significantly increase fuel efficiency by remaining in the top gear as much as possible,” said David McKenna, Mack director of powertrain sales and marketing. “Building on our fuel saving performance of our EPA 2010 certified MP engines, we’ve added four new Econodyne ratings – MP7-405E, MP8-415E, MP8-445E, and MP8-505E – fully optimized for fuel efficiency without sacrificing power.”

“EconoBoost initiates at 1,300 RPM, providing additional power that allows drivers to remain longer in the top two gears. The engine torque reverts back to the lower profile when the engine senses situations with zero torque input.”

Other enhancements include an optional one-piece windshield and an updated Grand Touring trim package with button-tuck vinyl and ultraleather seats “which will help us appeal to more truck operators,” offered Kevin Flaherty, senior vice president, sales and marketing.

Flaherty also emphasized the importance of the OEM’s new Customer Center and underlined the value of its 303 dealers offering sales, service and parts for Mack’s diverse vehicle lineup.

Expanding on its application prowess, the truck maker unveiled a new twin-steer package for its Granite model. Available in axle-forward or axle-back packages, the twin-steer now offers vertical back-of-cab aftertreatment – DPF and SCR.
