Peterbilt Motors Co. has announced an increase in production of the new Model 587 and Model 382 at the Peterbilt truck manufacturing facility in Denton, Texas.
The Model 587 is an EPA SmartWay certified vehicle offering exceptional quality, reliability and performance, the truck maker noted. It is equipped with standard front air disc brakes providing exceptional performance in stopping distance, brake handling and ease of maintenance. Newly-designed steering geometry offers 12% improved curb-to-curb maneuverability. In addition, an innovative forward lighting system enhances visibility 35% by more consistently distributing down-road light coverage, the company said.
The Model 587 is available with two sleepers or in a day cab configuration, making it ideal for long-haul fleets, driving teams or owner-operators. The day cab captures the exceptional fuel efficiency and aerodynamic styling of the Model 587 and transforms into a day cab configuration for tanker and regional haul applications, the truck maker added. The cab interior has swivel seats, dual armrests and a roomy 30-in. walk-through space. The dash layout features stylish colors and textures while gauges and switches are positioned within easy reach to provide an ergonomic work environment, according to Peterbilt.
The Model 587 is standard with the 2010 PACCAR MX engine with 380-485 HP. The engine utilizes fractured cap technology in both the connecting rods and main bearing caps to provide high shearing strength that result in a wide horsepower range and longer torque and power curves for more efficient operation. The fully integrated systems with modular components reduce design complexity, resulting in longer service intervals, increased uptime, lower operating costs and higher resale value, the company said.
The truck comes standard with premium interior featuring Peterbilt’s new SmartNav system, which provides integrated mobile computing, telematics, navigation and truck monitoring.
The Model 382 features a cab specifically designed to meet the needs of the driver, the truck maker said. The truck’s sloped hood provides optimal visibility and a technologically advanced forward-lighting system produces both a broader and brighter lighted area. With backlit gauges, contoured door panels, and rocker switches placed within easy reach, everything in the driver’s operating environment is ergonomically designed to keep the driver alert, comfortable and productive. The HVAC system offers improved airflow, but also reduces maintenance costs. Power windows, mirrors and lock switches are located in the new door pad design and dual cup holders provide added convenience.
The new Model 382 is powered by a 2010 Cummins ISL9 engine, which has one of the highest power-to-weight ratios in its class with heavy-duty features like replaceable wet liners. An improved electronic control module and improved airflow allow the ISL9 to run stronger and with greater responsiveness than previous engines. Ratings range from 345-380 HP with a maximum 1300 ft./lbs. of torque, the company said.
