XL‘s XLH hybrid electric drive technology is being used by the University of Virginia (UVA) to green its recycling and maintenance fleets, the company says.

The cleaner fleet vehicles contributed to the university receiving the Sustainable Fleet Accreditation from the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) and Calstart in January, XL says. In doing so, the university’s Facilities Management Fleet became the first university fleet in Virginia to receive this accreditation.

Since 2018, UVA’s recycling and maintenance divisions have been using Super Duty Ford F-250 trucks and a Ford Transit equipped with the XLH hybrid electric drive system to enable their work trucks to be 25% more fuel efficient and produce 20% fewer CO2 emissions, according to XL. In February, UVA added XLH Ford E-350 Cutaway box trucks to its facilities management fleet and is expecting similar results.
