Daimler launches new Fuso eCanter in Hong Kong

The next generation of Fuso eCanter light-duty electric truck was designed to work in densely populated cities.

Daimler Truck AG and its Japanese subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso Bus and Truck Corp. have announced the market launch of the next-generation eCanter in Hong Kong. The latest version of the electric light-duty truck is available in different variants between 5 and 8.55 tons.

Daimler tells us that the Fuso eCanter’s compact design is ideal for inner-city transportation in dense urban areas. With more than 7 million inhabitants in an area of 1100 square kilometers, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated metropolises in the world.

The eCanter is equipped with safety features such as Active Sideguard Assist 1.0 and Active Attention Assist, which Daimler says increase the safety of the driver and other road users. The new generation of eCanter went on sale in other international markets last year, and will continue to be distributed by the partner Universal Cars Ltd., which has been selling Fuso brand vehicles exclusively since 1976.

Hong Kong currently has Euro VI emission standards for trucks, and the city aims to be completely CO2-neutral by 2050. Currently, traffic in Hong Kong accounts for around 20% of the city’s CO2 emissions, according to Daimler. To promote the spread of electric commercial vehicles, the Hong Kong government has set up a 1.1 billion Hong Kong Dollar (around $140M USD at time of publication) New Energy Transport Fund to promote the integration of electric vehicles into existing fleets. Daimler expects the eCanter to be on the list of eligible vehicles that qualify for government subsidies.

“We are steadily adding more and more customer value and specification choices with our continuous introductions,” says Fredrik Allard, senior vice president and head of e-mobility at Scania. “And the customers reward us with increased interest since it is now obvious how well these trucks serve and behave in actual operations and how truly appreciated they are among drivers. We constantly hear stories about drivers that were skeptical at first, but then fell in love with their electric trucks.”
