We know it’s not easy to keep up with everything that happens in the world of trucking. So here are the biggest stories from September focused on the latest truck trends, all in one place.

5. Catch up with the news from the North American Commercial Vehicle Show

The first-ever North American Commercial Vehicle Show was a whirlwind of activity, both in terms of news and things to see. Among the biggest news at the show was the launch of two new trucks: The International HV severe-service line and the Mack Anthem, which was announced earlier in the month and showcased for the first time at the show. But there was a lot—a lot—more going on at the show, and if you missed the news, catch up with the biggest stories from Day One, Day Two and Day Three at these links; and take a look at a photo gallery featuring the sights of the show here.

4. The industry is steering toward automation

“Automated technology is out-pacing acceptance, but the stepping stones toward adoption have been laid in the form of adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation safety systems. Steering is the next logical step in its evolution, and availability of driver-assist steering functions is closer than you may think.”

Editor Jason Morgan dives into the importance of steering for future automated trucks.

3. Could “Uber for trucking” be the industry’s next technology breakthrough?

“‘Uber for trucking’ is an exciting prospect, but while it’s fun to dream, the reality of the situation is that, much like automated trucks, it’s not as easy as it sounds. There are a myriad of obstacles to overcome, and matching trucks with freight is nowhere near as simple as matching passengers with a driver.”

Senior Editor Alex Crissey separates the dream of an Uber-type service for trucking from the reality and the challenges.

2. Catching up with equipment buying trends

“How’s business? The rating from fleets is the highest ever (save one month in 2015) and all comments are positive, indicating that fleets are in great shape (except for the driver issue).”

Editor at Large Carol Birkland examines fleet buying trends as we head toward 2018.

1. A video focus on telematics, transmissions

This month’s episodes of FE’s On the Road series zeroed in on the impact of truck telematics and data on fleets’ daily business; and went hands-on with the new PACCAR automated transmission in the Peterbilt model 579.
